Coaching is dialog.
The word dialog has deep roots in the Western Philosophical tradition and literally, when traced back to original Greek, means to create through speaking. It is built on the idea that we can create meaning and even construct reality through language, a concept found in some form in most traditions. Coaching is not conversation, chit-chat, counseling, consulting or even discussion. It possesses a power that comes from exploring the creative tension that exists in the distance between vision and current reality.
When we dialog we arrive at a new place that did not exist before: a new clarity and a new vision. We literally create solutions where none existed before. When we work together, we are successful when both of us come away from each dialog with something new: a new learning, a new perspective or a new way forward.
